Assistance for ITIN Applications Now Available in Mount Shasta

Mt. Shasta, CA – After a year of waiting, JEDI is now officially a Certified Acceptance Agent for the IRS. A moratorium imposed on new Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) applications in 2022 halted plans to expand services at VITA at JEDI to include ITIN application assistance. However, with the moratorium now expired, JEDI and the VITA Program are happy to announce new in-person services through our Mount Shasta office. “Providing assistance to individuals who need ITIN numbers is another tool in our toolbox to meet the needs of people in Siskiyou and surrounding communities,” said Bruce Clark, Assistant Site Coordinator for the VITA program and the designated CAA for VITA at JEDI.

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a taxpayer identification number but who do not have and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security number. ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status, because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code. A Certified Acceptance Agent is a person or an entity (business or organization) who, pursuant to a written agreement with the IRS, is authorized to assist individuals in obtaining ITINs. The acceptance agent facilitates the application process by reviewing the necessary documents and forwarding completed Forms W-7 to the IRS. This service alleviates the need for applicants to submit original documents to the IRS.

The VITA Program at JEDI is one of only a few VITA sites nationwide that offer this service and is currently the only CAA in Siskiyou County.
